I think this is client-dependent, and client-version dependent.  It should
make no difference which way you do it, if your client supports both ways -
logically anyway.  Now, there might be a sublety in there somewhere in the
manner in which the connection is made and the username is transmitted -
though that wouldn't make any sense...
