Ken... is there any chance on a packet dump;  this being the on thing that
you've not seen yet...

  # tcpdump -i eth0 -vv not \( host linuxbox and host osxlaptop \
  > and port ssh \) and host osxlaptop

Which should ignore the SSH session to the box that you are using to do the
logging--but still show up any DNS requests going from the osx laptop to the
linux box during the session setup.

OTOH, you could just log from the other side of the linux box (assuming it's
doing masqurading, and it is failing somewhere in the NAT).

Is OSX, picking a port sub-1024 as the source-port for the session?... Try:

  ssh -P foo at bar.com

If it be so.  I certainly block <1024 stuff coming through my boxen.  Try
this last idea first, and then work upwards.
