It's worse than simply where the install it.

As delivered on the CD, gcc produces objects such that gdb is
unable to resolve module statics in core files.  Fixing it
requires rebuilding gcc with --with-gnu-as and
--with-as=/opt/sfw/bin/gas (or wherever you stuck it).
