There were no lack of posturing press releases at the time and
there was a very large investment in Sun Microsystems, Inc., by AT&T.
The companies that were left out (ie, were scared :-) formed
the OSF. Those were important days in the history of commercial Unix.
Nowadays all of the action is with the non-commercial Unix-alikes
and the commercial Unices trod along.

Their purchase of a 20% stake in Sun at the time demonstrates
otherwise.
It's hard to find press releases that old on the web but
this slightly-related press release from AT&T covers some
of it:

The current owners of "Unix" (SCO now Caldera) have no
vested interest in claiming their product is based on
joint AT&T/Sun foundations.
