There is sort of an anti-hacking thing built into the later models of the
unit.  In order to start hacking on the machine, you have to pull the
drive out and mount it on another linux machine and make a few changes.
TiVo put in one particular make of drives that won't spin up unless they
get a set of commands over the IDE bus...so you can't go around pulling
drives out and mounting them up on another machine.

But once you do get things hacked right, you can put any drive you want to
in it.
