Yes, if you disconnect any one switch entirely from the mesh then it's
almost equivalent to powering it off.

The trouble isn't with the resiliency of the rest of the network in that
scenario, but rather with the host connections directly off that
particular switch.  You obviously don't want visitors taking any
arbitrary group of hosts off the network, even for a short time during a
demo!  ;-)

Note that the only way to get full redundancy of a single switch is to
use a "designed redundant" switch, such as PTI's models where everything
but the mostly passive and optically isolated front panel and port
connectors can be hot-swapped without losing a single packet.  Damned
expensive gear, but some people "just gotta have it!"  :-)
