There are only two fundamental "modern" types of Sun optical mice, type-4
and type-5. Type-4 are the big boxy ones with oval buttons (and a visible
red light on the bottom when operating), type-5 have a rounded base with
rectangular buttons. Another post which just flashed by describes the
different pads.

Peel off the old ones and stick new stuff on (spray contact adhesive _on
the back of the felt_ for the best results). If you're open to new
experiences, I recommend you try sticky-backed teflon tape instead (can be
found at any large hardware store). It doesn't get cruddy like the felt
does and it glides across the pad quite nicely.

If you're sufficiently zany you can upgrade any type-5 mouse (optical or
mechanical) to 4800bps (stock is 1200) and gain better response, check the
list archives for details.
