They did. It's called ONC. The Sun/Force Computers 1E boards have the node
number in the NVRAM and will boot via TCP/IP across the VMEbus backplane.

There is also two independant TCP/IP over a backplane efforts. One on VMEbus
called BusNet http://www.vita.com, and on CompactPCI.
