First you do the ifconfig le0 plumb
then make a file in /etc called hostname.le0
in that file you put the name of the host (this name must be in the /etc/hosts
file)
if you are using non standard netmasks, they need to be in the /etc/netmasks
file.
after that you should reboot and the interface will be configured on the way up.

NAME
ifconfig - configure network interface parameters

SYNOPSIS
     /sbin/ifconfig interface [ address_family ]
          [ address [ dest_address ] ] [ up ] [ down ]
          [ auto-revarp ] [ netmask mask ]
          [ broadcast address ] [ metric n ] [ mtu n ]
          [ trailers | -trailers ] [ private | -private ]
          [ arp | -arp ] [ plumb ] [ unplumb ]

plumb Open the device associated with the physical
interface name and set up the streams needed
for TCP/IP to use the device. Before this
is done, the interface will not show up in
                     the output of ifconfig -a.

unplumb Destroy any streams associated with this
device and close the device. After this
command is executed, the device name should
not show up in the output of ifconfig -a.
