Its not a stupid question its just one that no one initially knows the
answer to. :-)

/etc/defaultdomain
/etc/defaultrouter
/etc/resolv.conf

and tweak  /etc/nsswitch.conf
so that the 'hosts' line reads:

hosts	dns files
