If the machines on your LAN don't have valid IP addresses (they don't
all have direct connections to the internet) then you should be using
IPs from the series which are set aside for just this purpose in
RFC1597:

     -----------------------------------------------------------
     | RESERVED PRIVATE NETWORK ALLOCATIONS |
     -----------------------------------------------------------
     | Network | Netmask | Network Addresses |
     | Class | | |
     -----------------------------------------------------------
     | A | 255.0.0.0 | 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 |
     | B | 255.255.0.0 | 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 |
     | C | 255.255.255.0 | 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 |
     -----------------------------------------------------------

Nifty chart taken from the Linux NET3-HOWTO.
