[geeks] Solaris being discontinued? Rumors flying

Tremendously unfortunate; Oracle had given to them the crown jewels of Unix and pi**ed it away on their venality.

IF Larry Ellison is so smart, why couldn't he make a go of it? Imagine, he could have led a flagship OS and had an entire suite of apps to run on it, selling hardware, software, consulting etc. services all on the same stack, that he owned. If he had re-booted the SunRay systems or ported it to a similar level of hardware like the Chromebooks, he could have also competed for mobile and remote office.

It's like Kodak shutting down Kodachrome sales all over again.

Subject: [geeks] Solaris being discontinued? Rumors flying

>From https://www.thelayoff.com/t/KBEVoB1 :

"Solaris being canned, at least 50% of teams to be RIF'd in short term
All hands meetings being cancelled on orders from legal to prevent news from
spreading.

Hardware teams being told to cease development.

There will be no Solaris 12, final release will be 11.4.

Orders coming straight from Larry.

No info on timing yet."
