Figured this one out. Hopefully serve as useful information to other
Apple users.

The issue is caused by a hard drive monitoring menubar program, which
for some reason fires off /bin/ps repeatedly as a child process and does
not reap them.

[demime 1.01d removed an attachment of type application/pgp-keys which had a name of 0x5936BC24.asc]
