For PCs, I only recommend Dell. I repaired Dell laptops as part of my job
as Sun Hardware Guy and found that the laptops were put together very well
and that Dell uses the same motif for all their laptops which makes working
on them very easy.

The Dell Latitudes are, by far, the easiest to work on and to find parts
for (Amazon, eBay, etc.). They are easily upgradable. The Vostros are
good also and come without the crapware that the consumer, Inspiron, comes
with.
Latitude = business
Vostro - small business/home business

Dell Financial Services sells on eBay.
Dell.com sells dented/returned/reconditioned laptop also.
The also have a direct site that someone listed in an earlier email.
Dell laptop also show up on Craigslist. I have bought a lot off of
Craigslist with no failures.
For any used laptop, get the Service Tag before seeing it and look up the
shipping configuration on Dell.com. See if the laptop has what you need.
When you see the laptop, test everything. (I like McDonald's because
their wireless is a PITA. It it works on McD's, it will work everywhere.)
I test all the ports except video. I check the BIOS. I check the DVD by
booting a Linux live CD. This also tests the hardware--wireless works
better in Linux than Windows in some cases.
