It's not an urban legend, its more of a pragmatic limit due to USB input
standards and design limitations.

Yes technically you can get more with USB, but the solutions to do that
are generally buggy and non-standard.

It could even be a matter of getting everyone to agree on a fix, but for
now 6KRO is what we have in common use.

Also even with hacks and special drivers, I don't think anyone has ever
managed NKRO with USB.

There is a simple little program to test what your keyboard can do. I
remember putting my Model M aside when I finally got so I could outrun
it and it was terrible for games.

Now I generally type faster, by which I mean individual key hits so I'm
not hitting quite to many keys at once, but I still type almost as fast
as I did when I was a "slider", putting several down at once before release.
