It's a religeous issue. As I keep kosher, I can't use anything made from a
mammal or bird with dairy. Fish are okay for either, but only certain ones. 

If it's made from an animal it has to be a kosher animal (cow, horse, deer)
and slaughtered and prepared in the proper ritual manner. 

If it's silicone impregnated wood chips, then it's fine.
