[geeks] favorite mp3 splitter/joiner/editor?

thanks to all for your advice.  i've now ripped 2 more audiobooks via
cd -> aiff -> edit -> mp3 using itunes and audacity, and they've gone
without a hitch.  found i can pre-edit the first rip by setting start
and end times to snip the 'end of disc 5'/'disc 6' nattering, and
itunes honors them.  that makes the edit step a simple quick paste.

also found my notebook has -just-enough- room for a 12cd book if i
delete redundant files asap during the edit step.

puzzled why itunes seems to work so hard on the first rip, since both
cd format and aiff are 16-bit pcm.  i do have error checking turned
on.
