Yes and no. It is odd to say the least.

I am jonathan.katz at gmail.com ... but once in a while (about 6 times a
year) I get e-mail for jonathankatz at gmail.com (which is not me.)

I don't know how they do or don't do account mapping, but if there are
ones that are close with a '.' in them, beware.
