the 'maunder minimum', 80 years when as far as is known there were
-no- sunspots, coincided with the 'little ice age' [15th c?] when not
only the thames but also the dutch canals [hans brinker...] and the
straits between denmark and sweden froze over.

causality is not established without more and better-observed
experiments...
