Just a nit: I didn't say we didn't...

I wanted to be clear about ruling the world *AND* taking good care of  
it.

Right now we only do the first part, and part of the second.  Exactly  
how much of the second is a timeless debate... :)

The galaxy is full of them.

Plus, we have records of various bodies being totally obliterated, so  
it's silly to think it could not happen here.

Of course, we are protected fairly well.

Evidently the other planets and asteroid belts absorb a lot of damage  
instead of us.
