" The TV bands are going to go to auction soon anyways. The
" digital broadcast change is moving TV into a much smaller
" single band (UHF, I think). So all that space is going to go
" to the highest bidder anyways.
"
" TV has occupied some tasty bandwidth, including a chunk of
" the "low band" (60 Mhz). The low band has unique propagation
" characteristics that are appealing.

i thought so too, but i believe only vhf-lo [ch 2-6] is being
abandoned - for emergency services comm use. that's the most
desirable part anyway.

when i checked my location with http://www.tvfool.com/modeling/ it
showed that ch 7-13 would continue after the transition. several
stations in that range currently have uhf digital mirrors which will
move back down to vhf post-transition. none of the ch 2-6 stations
are showing this.
