Nitpicking:

A lot of people in this thread are incorrectly assuming that "slavery"  
== "black slavery in America".

Almost all other slavery had a far longer and more extensive history,  
and was more varied in its characteristics.

A better analogy for taxation as slavery would be roman slavery.  At  
one point Rome set their slaves "free", but in reality it was just a  
change in nature.

They went from being physically enslaved to being legally enslaved.

The end result was largely the same.
