uh ...   the fkeys/ESC on my 4000 are normal full-size keys.  (Well, OK, 
technically they're maybe 15%-20% narrower top-to-bottom than the fkeys 
on, say, a Sun type 6, but they're the same width.)

Are you thinking of the Natural Keyboard Elite?  That thing was a 
horrible misbegotten abortion ... I think just about *everybody* who 
ever had to use one hated it and complained about the key layout.
