Years ago, the "audiophile" community used to swear by Radio Shack 
catalog #970-1018 as the best ultra-cheap phono stage out there if I 
remember correctly. It retailed for $24.99. No idea if it is still 
available, but it's cheap and evidentially sounds pretty good as well.
