It's not the luddite aspect, it's the efficiency aspect.  I could  
handle 500+ emails a day on pine with no problem.  The advent of the  
GUI mail readers has just killed that.  I think that implementing  
sane support of IMAP (or multiple accounts in general) on mutt/pine/ 
etc has languished because of the rise of web mail.  And the fact  
that the original architecting of these programs happened at a time  
when the notion of having more than one email account was not really  
thought of.

With the modern preference for GUIs, trying to build a new curses  
based mail program that is architected this way would likely not gain  
much traction in the OSS world.
