Interesting. We were staying at a Hyatt in Fairfax, Virginia early this
week. Each adult lugged along their laptop - only my daughter's laptop
(Toshiba running XP) could see the hotel's access point. The two Macs
(a MacBook Pro and a G4 laptop) could ping the website but would not
resolve it with either Safari or Firefox. Daughter was using IE7 and
not Firefox. The signal strength was good at all times.

In other words the Macs could not reach the hotel's hotspot to obtain
the credentials to login. The XP laptop Just Worked.

We were terribly distracted (family emergency going on) so I didn't
pursue it further than that but now I wonder just what in the world was
going on there? Anyone else have a similar experience?
