There are people trying to do just that.  But transporting hydrogen is
difficult; the only ways we know of to carry a useful amount of
hydrogen in a suitably small space are either prohibitively expensive
or highly explosive.  Figuring out a way to carry large amounts of
hydrogen in a way that's not horribly explosive yet still economic for
mass-market cars is an area of active research; I have a subscription
to Science News and see articles about it now and then.
