FYI, I discovered this after having the exact same problem with the
Toshiba 1401 DVD-ROM on an Ultra 10.  Would boot CDs just fine, but
Sol9 and Sol10 DVDs wouldn't boot.  Ended up doing a minimal Sol9
install off CDs so I could apply the firmware update, and then 
booting from DVD worked fine.
