I can't say about Tiger (haven't used it yet) but just last week I
upgraded to 10.3.9 and "lost" my Firewire drive, a MacAlly PHR-100AF. OS
X newbie as I am, I was oblivious to Apple's recommendation that
FireWire drives be ejected and unplugged during upgrades :-| Rumor had
it that upgrading the firmware in the FW drive would fix the problem, so
I emailed MacAlly support, and they provided the firmware update
utility. Now the drive is back, no data loss or corruption. Other than
the OS X upgrade gotcha, I've had no problems with FW on my Mini - of
course, this is my first OS X machine, and the only other Mac I've owned
was a Mac 128K (which is resting in my attic currently)
