Um.......   OK, then the opnly possible conclusion is that I didn't
understand your explanation of how it works.

Yup ... STV systems and ranking systems are good ways of avoiding this
and allowing selection of the candidate most acceptable to the largest
number of voters.  But I apparently just don't see how the approval-vote
works.
