I need recommendations for rackmount servers.

I'm in need (well, helping a friend look actually) of a couple of rackmount
machines, 1/2/3U, preferrably around 1Ghz (but not essential), 512M RAM,
10/100 ethernet, IDE disks, CD-ROM. Need to be able to run RedHat.

Keep an eye out for SGI 1100 servers. They're 1U dual processor boxes based
around a Serverworks motherboard. They have dual socket 370, up to 4GB
PC133 reg ECC RAM, two fixed disk bays with an internal ATA/100 controller,
single 66/64 PCI, and dual integrated 10/100.

The only weak part IMO is the poxy 200 watt PSU. They do blow out so you
need to keep at least one machine spare. One other catch is the
integrated Promise ATA chipset - the linux driver causes DMA errors unless
you run at UDMA mode 1 or slower.

We've been selling used dual 1GHz machines with 2GB RAM for about $330
USD. Unfortunately there is not way to get these to the USA economically. But
you may be able to find a local supplier.

Regards,

Gavin
