remember, to the stockholders, the only real product of any company is
money.  anything it does along the way is an incidental side effect,
and they just want it to do whatever makes the most money.

car companies [used to] go through cycles: car guys would rise and
generate interesting new products which would attract customers and
build sales, but at a cost.  then bean counters would rise and squeeze
every nickel out of manufacturing they could, increasing profits but
driving customers away.  then car guys would rise...
