Nope the fire escapes were open. As Kurt said human nature kicked in and
most people tried to exit the way they came in.

The survivors said that even though the exits were clearly marked they
could not be seen because of the thick smoke from the burning sound
deadening insulation.

The Station is just up the street from here. The traffic is amazing. I hope
that all the cars belong to relatives not gawkers.
