Real hardware isn't always possible. Sometimes it doesn't exist. Or in 
some cases would be too expensive to keep running. For instance :-

As a software orientated person, it seems just as important to be able 
to keep the software alive and runnable in some form. Real hardware 
would be nice; re-constructed hardware almost as nice; and an emulator 
is realistic.
