Ur ... it *is* a development kernel, so you can't really expect it to be 
perfect.

I'm not sure about playing with it, but it's a "requirement" with Gentoo 
Linux (well it isn't really, but that's how it's initially installed) 
and it seems ok. 

I've had some unpleasant experiences with ext3fs though ... a number of 
kernel panics on a cache cluster member (ext3fs was only used for the 
o/s ... reiserfs for the data), and another Linux server. Kernel 2.4.19 
*might* have sorted those panics.
