This is a carryover of the Java discussion.

Goal: Decent desktop UNIX workstation.

 From Apple I can get:
Power MacIntosh
Dual PPC G4 CPU's at 857MHz ea., 256K L2 cache, 1MB L3 cache
133MHz system bus
256MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM
Combo drive (DVD/CD-RW)
UltraSCSI controller
36GB Ultra160 SCSI HDD
Nvidia GeForce4 MX dual display w/32MB DDR
Gigabit ethernet
audio
USB
Firewire
OS X 10.2.1
- ---
Cost: $2,019

 From Sun I can get:
Sun Blade 150
650MHz UltraSPARC IIi CPU, 512K L2 cache
Sun PGX64 graphics
  256 MB (1 @ 256-MB DIMM)
40 GB EIDE HDD
10/100BASE-T ethernet
USB/Firewire
CD-ROM
Smart card reader
Solaris 8
- ---
Cost: $1,995

Now picking on Apple for being overpriced/underpowered seems to be the
favorite sport of a lot of people. About the only really tangible
thing in favor of the Sun is that Solaris is clearly a more mature OS
than OS X (though OS X is rapidly improving). Also the L2 cache on the
Sun is bigger than that of the Apple, though there is no L3 cache (at
least none advertised) on the Sun.
