This can work depending on the situation, and whether there are any enablers
involved. Most Really Old Macs will run generally run up to 7.5.5 and even
7.6. They may not be terribly happy about it though. Quadras will run up
through 8.1.

Not always, but PPC's need at least 7.5 (or the special version of 7.1 that
Apple briefly offered).
