I think it was a combination of things... partly the "click of death".
That and Iomega's refusal to admit to the problem.

For those that don't know, the click of death was when your zip drive
started going "clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick".  Both your drive
AND THE MEDIA in the drive were dead.  I don't recall the underlying cause,
but having a failure mode which lost your data really invalidates the idea
of a "backup" media...
