One of the best "basic introductory" books I've ever seen, and read, is
by Charles Petzold.

"Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0735611319

I had the hardback, and recently bought the paperback as well.
Its Microsoft Press, but is OS-agnostic, and is a DAMN GOOD BOOK.
I'd recommend it for anybody on this list.
