I disagree.  Sure, profit may have been a major motive, but one must
not overlook the benefits of being able to send troublemakers to the
front line of a war where they will be killed without anyone blaming
you. 

And, one must not overlook the benefits of removing the particularly
violent elements in your society and shipping them off to do their
raping and pillaging in another land.
