I like the idea of IMAP in theory.  However I've found that it's 
practically unusable unless you have a semi-decent connection.  My 56K 
modem just doesn't cut it, especially when Apple's Mail app is trying to 
cache the remote folders.  In my case I actually lost a fair amount of 
mail through this unfortunately.  My current solution is to download 
mail to my iBook via POP3 (using stunnel to SSL-wrap it) and 
occasionally (say, daily), to tar/scp the mail folders to a local server.

The other half of the solution involves ensuring all my list e-mail goes 
to a separate account from my *real* email.  That way if I'm on the 
road, I can pick up my real email using ssh/pine or webmail and it's not 
cluttered up with 1000s of list emails.
