Mach 3.0 is part of Darwin.  xnu runs on top of Mach.  The BSD subsystem
(userland) is an optional install and isn't even needed for the system.
ProjectBuilder, InterfaceBuilder, and other Cocoa dev tools require the
BSD subsystem and use a highly customized gcc with the Cocoa libraries.  I
think the latest one is 2.95.2 or something, and the last OPENSTEP 4.2 one
was 2.7.2.
