[geeks] gnus tutorial

I'm trying to figure out how to use gnus so that I can switch to it from mutt.

What I keep running into is that the tutorial/faq/howto things I'm finding
on the web assume that I'm using a pop server or an imap server. But, I'm
logged into the mail server, and I just want gnus to suck my mail out of
/var/spool/mail/jdboyd, and I want it to leave the mail there unless I
specifically delete something or move it (as opposed to automatically moving
all messages from there to a mail file in my ~ dir). Could anyone say how to
do this, or point me to a document that explains it? I think I want unix mail
box for the backend.

Basically, think of how mutt works when given the following config file, and
you will have how I'm hoping for gnus to work.

set sort=threads
ignore *
unignore date from to cc subject x-mailer resent-from reply-to
set mbox=$MAIL
