Thanks for the compliment.

I never really wanted the managerial-type duties, but having earned the
technical respect of my coworkers left me in a natural position to assume that
role. One of the things I'm looking forward to at $NEW_JOB is getting to be a
pure code monkey again. I will definitely miss network admin work and
configuring big boxen, but it will be nice to go back to what originally got me
into the field. (And it's an excuse to further grow my Sun collection. :)

It was prepared only in my head. I wasn't even planning on telling $CEO the day
I did; I just found out unexpectedly that he was going out of town for three
weeks so I had to speed up my plan a little. I did want to do him the courtesy
of telling him in person.

In the shower that morning I was thinking about how the conversation might go.
I also carefully reviewed my hiring papers and my non-compete agreement (*not*
in the shower, I should point out) to make sure there was nothing he could nail
me on. Never underestimate a desperate man, I figured.

Me too :) I've heard good things about $NEW_COMPANY and in fact the guy who
originally hired me four years ago at $OLD_COMPANY (shortly before he himself
quit) is now on the team I will be joining.
