mii-tool if it is available on your system (this varies
widely).

[root at server /root]# mii-tool 
eth0: no autonegotiation, 10baseT-HD, link ok
eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok

- -HD = half duplex
- -FD = full duplex
