Because you never saw/heard/hefted the same Barracuda ATA model?!?!?!?
(eg. the ST320011 vs. the ST318418; or maybe the ST340016 vs. the
ST336918.  The latter pair have almost exactly the same internal specs,
and on the former pair the SCSI version seems to have slower internal
transfer rates)
