~ We do that here. We have application admins, Oracle admins, and
~ SYSTEM admins. I'm a SYSTEM admin.
~
~ Other than knowing how to restart an app when it dies (Weblogic,
~ etc), I dont touch it. I leave that to someone who gets paid solely
~ to keep that app running.
~
~ I get paid to keep the *machines* up.

Sorta like that at my company too. Worrying about application support
mucking around does give me hives, but they are pretty good at sticking to
the app and calling a sysadmin when they need deeper changes. We have
Application Support Specialists, System/Network Admins, DataBase Admin(1),
Software Engineers, System Engineer(1) and Network Engineers (me + an
Engineer/Manager who mostly manages).

It goes to what I've said before, you can be mediocre at everything or great
at one thing. Some people think Admins are "below" Engineers, but thats
bullshit. The Admins here do things quickly on a daily basis that I have to
read a book to do, and they can grind their way through Engineering tasks
with a good book and some time. That said, usually the tasks are separated
to the specialties.
