Actually, Linux has TERRIBLE preempting.  You just usually don't notice
because everyone is running it on a pretty fast processor.  That's
why you can get music players to skip easily by doing heavy graphics.
Or why sparc linux can't do 9600 baud reliably.

That's why the people who have written the preempt patches are so frustrated
that they've been kept out.  People doing audio stuff suffer greatly under
linux...
