Don't handle them.  Armadillos and humans are the only species
known to contract Hansen's Disease (Mycobacterium leprae).  They
caught it from people originally and now carry it in the wild.
While Hansen's Disease isn't easy to catch, and can be treated
with antibiotics, why take a chance?  You don't want to find
out you have contracted the disease after something falls off.
