To the people who were complaining about Maya costing too much a month or
three ago:

http://www.vfxpro.com/brief/mainv/0,2444,34260,00.html

The price of Maya Complete is now only $1999 (down from $7500). Unlimited
is now $6999 (down from $16,000).

I believe this pricing holds for all platforms.

With the complete version, you give up Subdivision surfaces (although I've
heard rumors of a cheap or free plug in that gives them back), Cloth
simulation (but you still have the dynamics engine so animating cloth only
requires more work, or a pluging that probably exists), Matchmoving (third
party software is available, such as the irix tools from hammer head), and
fur (again, doable without the maya fur, especially if using BMRT or
Entropy).

So, you people with the onyxs should be reasonably happy. 2 grand aint cheap,
but it is doable, and this is the software that created shrek, among other
things.
